Description:
The Byron Hot Springs is the “Carlsbad of the West!” and during the early 20th century the famous, the wealthy, the infirm and the curious arrived to enjoy the Resort. The 160-acre property sits in eastern Contra Costa County near the western edge of the San Joaquin River. Guests visiting the resort came for a “change” and a “rest” or, as the proprietor quipped, “The staff got the change and the Hotel got the rest.” Three hotels, all designed by the renowned San Francisco architect, James Reid, provide the backdrop for 19th century taffeta skirts, prohibition entertainments, “the Cure,” and WWII secret POW interrogations. The Resort provides mineral water cures, private sanitarium medical treatments and recreation on one of the oldest golf courses in the West. Times changed as the U.S. Army leased the property for WWII use as “Camp Tracy.” In its day, the Byron Hot Springs rivaled the Hotel Del Monte and the Hotel Del Coronado in popularity.
