Description:
Patriotism is nothing new in America, and Americans enjoy displaying our patriotism outwardly and sometimes, perhaps, excessively. In our desire to be as visibly patriotic as possible, many Americans are unknowing, but blatantly, disrespecting the American flag, according to Section 8 of the US Flag Code. In this class, Historian and Los Medanos College Professor, David Hlusak, will show us just how often Americans disrespect the flag with their displays of patriotism. The class will look at what is legal and what is illegal, and, by looking at symbolism and connections to power structures, will raise questions about the messages we are trying to send versus the messages we are actually sending, the rules and guidelines we are disregarding. While patriotism is a good thing, excessive patriotism, or nationalism, calls for exclusion and harm. Are we sending our intended message with our own displays of patriotism?
