Description:
Historian and Los Medanos College Professor, David Hlusak, walks through the history, accomplishments, and reputations of the Hero of New Orleans and United State’s seventh President, Andrew Jackson, and Underground Railroad conductor and Civil War hero, Harriet Tubman. This class will explore questions like why we memorialize the dead, what purpose do memorials serve, and who deserves to be memorialized. Does Andrew Jackson deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill? Would he have wanted to be memorialized on paper currency? Who have Americans placed on our currency in the past? How does our choice reflect our values as a nation? And who will we choose to memorialize, as we continue the work of defining who we are as a nation, as a people, with each successive generation?
