Pioneering Women (Women's History Month)
#: 100    ID: PW    Section: 01
product
Description:
East Contra Costa County women hold a number of “firsts” in California history. Unlike Gold Rush California, Delta settlers had wives and soon families. East County women were an equal partner in family success. Daughters became morticians, mothers became school district board members, sisters became silk-worm cultivators, and cousins worked as resort staff. Women gained the vote in 1911 a full nine years before the 19th amendment. Crucial to California women’s’ suffrage were women in agriculture and those living in rural areas. Urban San Francisco voters decidedly defeated the initiative. Women’s suffrage barely passed sparsely populated, urban Los Angeles. The rural Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties carried the day!
