Description:
John Marsh was reviled by the Bidwell party as the “Meanest man in California”. More accurately, he was the only man in Central California circa 1836. No other settler lived outside the presidio-protected, mission communities. Our East County founder was a Harvard University educated mountain-man. He found his way to California via the Santa Fe trail after a storied, experience serving with Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War, trading and saving from small pox Native Americans in the Midwest, marrying a Souix/French wife, and scouting with Kit Carson. And all experienced before single-handedly saving the Pueblo of Los Angeles from small pox, acquiring 40,000 acres east of Mount Diablo for $500.00, and welcoming John C. Fremont to his adobe in 1844.
