The Brentwood Coal Mine: Boom and Bust
#: 07    ID: BCM    Section: 01
product
Description:
Ten years after the Gold Rush, East County had its own Rush – a Coal Rush. The largest outcropping of coal discovered in California was discovered in 1858 just south of Antioch. California’s first corporation formed, investments made, and riches realized! Alice Marsh and her trustee, Charles Marsh, caught the speculation fever, too. They partnered with investor, Charles Sanford, to develop the Los Medaños Coal Operation. Stock speculation and considerable investment proved the vein a “bust.” Sanford filed for bankruptcy in 1875 but not before leaving a legacy. Sanford is the true father of modern-day Brentwood as he contributed the land forming the Township of Brentwood, granted a right-of-way to the San Pablo and Tulare Railroad, and established the depot.
