Description:
The Delta waterways are historically the transportation highways of our region. Ships are key to using that modality for recreation, commerce and, ultimately, prosperity. The first sidewheelers were constructed in New England, disassembled, shipped around the Horn, and reassembled in San Francisco Bay.  Soon, hay scows, potato boats, side and sternwheelers, ketches, feluccas, fishing boats and more were built on makeshift ways along Delta mudflats. Shipbuilding continued in importance up to 1928 when the first spanning of the San Joaquin River occurred with construction of the Antioch Bridge in 1928. Up until that time, a boat or ferry was the only method of connecting to Sacramento from the Bay Area short of by land through Tracy and Stockton.

Join us as we discover the shipbuilding expertise that moved people and goods throughout the Delta, prototyped the WWII Navy PT boats, outraced the Federal Revenuer boats, and made history.
