Prohibition and Bootlegging: Delta Roots.
#: SP24    ID: PBD    Section: 01

Description:
The largest Federal Revenue Agent raid in Northern California on illegal liquor production occurred on Bethel Island during Prohibition. Local and respected businessmen, well known in the area, built an industrial sized still and produced illegal hooch by the barrel. Fast boats came in the night to transport bottles and barrels downriver at speeds that defied Federal Revenue cutters. What else was going on out in the tulles? Join us as we explore production of licensed sacramental wine, unlicensed home wine making, and distillation of spirits. The closure of California’s largest distillery, the Jost Distillery, Antioch at the passage of the 18th Amendment spawned more winemaking and distillery works in the 1920s than ever before in the California Delta. Making spirits was just half the fun. Transporting it was the real excitement.  Join us as we return to the Roaring Twenties in the California Delta.
